The GW Student Association stands in solidarity with over 800,000 Dreamers who may lose their immigration status as a result of the Trump Administration’s reversal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.
The Trump Administration’s decision to rescind DACA threatens to ruin the lives of many immigrants, including current and former GW students, who came to the United States as children and infants. As a community, we must stand together in support of the basic and fundamental rights of Dreamers, who have made incredible contributions to society, both at the University and throughout the nation.
We echo the words of GW University President Thomas LeBlanc, who stated, “GW is a better institution because of its ability to admit talented, gifted and passionate students without regard to national origin or ethnicity and without requiring residents of the United States to provide documentation.”
The University offers many resources for students concerned or affected by the recent changes. Last Spring, GW reaffirmed its commitment to support undocumented students by announcing that the GW’s Immigration Law school clinic would provide legal assistance to all students. An external law firm is also available to answer student questions and provide certain services free of charge. Additional resources include, but are by no means limited to, the Multicultural Student Services Center (MSSC), the Honey W. Nashman Center, the Center for Student Engagement, and Mental Health Services.
As the University continues monitoring the status of DACA in the upcoming months, it is our responsibility as members of the GW community to stand alongside our undocumented students, while also remaining committed in advocating for diversity and inclusiveness. To Dreamers at The George Washington University: you are always welcome here.
